Options for a case and boot drives PDF Print E-mail

Looked at some options for the new server

  • Case: Codegen 19" Server 4U600 - 72 euro
  • Boot disk Solid state SS: OZCore 32 Gb SSD - 138 euro (32 Gb) ca 220 euro (64 Gb)
  • 2.5" Disk Array 4SA [Link]

I am considering putting 2x 32 Gb mirror boot ssd drives in and 3x 1 Tb RAID 5/Z/3 as data storage. Solid state are low power and quick and don't have the spin up time after power management shut them down. This will make the server react quicker when its needed.

 Still looking for

  • Which CPU/Mainboard to use?
  • How much memory? I am doubting between 1 and 2 Gb.
  • Which 3x TB 3,5 inch hard drives?
  • 2 very quiet and cool fan?
  • Which power supply?

Plans for a new low power fileserver at home PDF Print E-mail

My trusty old SunBlade 100 with 1x 70 Gb boot disk and a 120 Gb data disk are becoming full. My DSLR hobby with RAW files is taking its toll on the available capacity on the hard disk. It run Solaris 10, JSPWiki, and Samba for CIFS file services.

Requirements for the new server:

  • As low power as possible when in idle state (power down disks, cpu throttled to a few watts)
  • A quick as possible when I need it (So I am not looking for an ultra low power server that can barely run a network stack)
  • Needs to virtually noiseless
  • Needs to fit into my 19 inch rack
  • Mirrored boot disk
  • Some raid form for the data disk, mirror or RAID-5 or RAID-Z
  • Gigabit network interface
  • Enough memory to run smoothly
  • Minimum data storate

Implementation idea's:

  • Via CPU based mainboard or low power Intel or AMD chip
  • Need to run Solaris x64
  • Want to run ZFS
  • SSD based boot disk
  • 2,5 inch boot drives?
  • 4 disks in RAID
